Museum of sacred art

From establishment to the new itinerary

Since its establishment in 1971, the museum space has been integrated into the heart of the ancient convent. The current museum layout is the result of a comprehensive survey of the artistic heritage held at Monte Berico, conducted throughout 2020.

This effort led to the creation of a new itinerary divided into six thematic sections, providing a pedagogically cohesive narrative of the collection. The exhibition features over 500 artifacts, dating from the 14th to the 21st century.

The collections of the artistic heritage

The artistic heritage on display is highly diverse.

Here are the main collections:

Historical collection of ex-votos dedicated to the Madonna of Monte Berico (15th-21st centuries), predominantly “for favors received”;
Iconographic testimonies related to the history of the sanctuary;
Liturgical utensils and vestments from the former sacristy of the sanctuary and closed convents of the Servants of Mary Order;
Artworks related to the history and spirituality of the Servants of Mary;
Collection of spontaneous donations;
Post-byzantine Icons (greek, russian, and neo-byzantine).

Some of the museum’s major works

The past blends with the present

The Museum is designed and experienced as a meeting place open to everyone, where one can explore an important religious and cultural heritage from the past that engages with the future.

It is a dynamic space where the displays periodically feature different works, allowing for small thematic exhibitions aimed at deepening the topics covered in the museum’s journey. Currently, the total area of the museum is 372 m², spread across six rooms of varying sizes, resulting from architectural expansions that took place over a long period, from the 15th to the 19th century.

This layout involves the presence of architectural barriers. In response to the challenge of physically overcoming these barriers, the museum staff provides alternative routes that traverse the monumental areas of the complex, accessible to individuals with mobility disabilities. The Museum also manages the exhibitions set up in the multifunctional room Sette Santi Fondatori, located next to the Penitentiary.
